Why Rich Girls Never Take Their Jewelry Off

There’s a certain kind of rich girl who keeps a zillion gold and platinum baubles on 24/7.

She’s usually the kind of rich girl who jumps on bars to dance in a short skirt and maybe spends a borderline-sus amount of time yachting in Dubai each winter.

And no matter how close she is to catching an indecent exposure ticket in her barely-existent monokini, she still never takes off her jewelry.

It’s not just because she’s lazy and forgetful as a result of living off of a trust fund. It’s because she can keep all her baubles on for extended periods of time, because her jewels are just that high-quality.

See, lower-quality jewelry can contain nickel or copper — even if it’s technically made of silver or gold. Marina Peredo, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, told Self magazine that these metals can be “extremely irritating to the skin.” As they tarnish, they can even turn your skin black.

You can even shower in the good stuff. But if you’re buying “gold” and “silver” knockoffs at Claire’s, don’t keep it on for too long and especially don’t shower in it.

“Costume or ‘fashion’ jewelry that consists of sterling silver or nickel plating has a tendency to tarnish, and this tarnishing can discolor your skin,” Marina says. “I would advise my patients NOT to wear the less expensive jewelry in the shower.”

Psst — by “costume or ‘fashion’ jewelry,” she means the cheap stuff.

For a true rich girl look this summer, make sure you’re picking jewels that are actually gold, not gold-plated. Also make sure the piece is at least 14 karats. Anything less and you might as well not even bother. If you buy something gold and still aren’t sure if it’s legit, test it with a magnet. If it sticks to the magnet, that means it’s got additives that can discolor your skin.

If silver’s more your thing, you can try the magnet test or check out more tips here.

Now we totally understand why Kylie Jenner became imprisoned by her Cartier last year — the gold was so high-quality, there was really no reason to remove it.
