Pussycat Doll O.G. J Sutta Has a New Single: 11 Things You Need to Know
Today is a major day for one Zayn Malik, former member of boy band One Direction. But we’re more preoccupied by another new solo act: J Sutta, formerly of the 2000s’ hottest girl group the Pussycat Dolls.
Since the Dolls broke up, J has become the best kind of solo artist: the kind who sees no issue with wearing a head-to-toe skintight sparkle jumpsuit during daylight hours on a Thursday in New York after a blizzard.
She dropped by Galore’s east coast offices yesterday in exactly that ensemble, offset by a tasteful black turtleneck and faux fur coat because it is January after all. And we learned that she’s fierce, friendly, and doesn’t give a fuck. I mean, look at this cutie:
The PCD OG is currently promoting her fab new pop-dance single “Forever.” We got a sneak peek, and can verify that it’s three minutes of sheer good vibes, sounding like a mix of Major Lazer and 90s Madonna. It’s major and we especially can’t wait for the remix featuring Meek Mill that J told us about — but it doesn’t hit the public until Monday. (UPDATE: Listen to the song here!)
In the meantime, J Sutta has quite the colorful backstory, even beyond her days as a Pussycat Doll. Here are 10 facts you need to know about her before her new single drops:
1. She got her start on a soap opera playing Megan Fox’s sister.
When J was growing up in Miami, she got cast on a soap opera called “Ocean Avenue.” She played a gothic teen who was on drugs until her friend died and she transformed into the most popular girl in school, as one does. Megan Fox played her sister.
“I knew she was going to be a star,” J said. “She’s so blunt and intelligent. I love women that are strong and fierce like that.”
2. She used to be captain of the Miami Heat cheerleaders.
J says the key to getting a spot on the team was her love for basketball. She went to so many games, people behind the scenes noticed her and she worked her way not only onto the team, but into the captain’s spot.
3. How’d she land the PCD gig? A Smokey the Bear commercial.
J was cast in a fire prevention commercial choreographed by Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin. She had to wear a leotard tuxedo and pretend to put a fire out with sand that flew out of her tophat. From there, Robin invited her to join the Pussycat Dolls, which at that point was a 50-member cabaret/burlesque group. The group would later be winnowed down to nine members and turned into a music group, and J made the cut.
4. She was once on the news dancing in a Chiquita banana costume.
Having just visited Vegas and seen an over-the-top performance at the Fountainebleau, she was inspired to wear an elaborate costume for a corporate performance. She didn’t expect news cameras to be there, but they were — and she couldn’t hide from them.
5. When she won a VMA with the Pussycat Dolls, she cried.
“You’re not supposed to cry when you win a VMA,” J said. But the award meant so much to her because it was for dance — a skill that she thinks is often overlooked, underappreciated, and definitely underpaid in the industry.
6. Deborah Gibson called her out when they first met.
J counts the artist formerly known as Blondie as a major influence for her — but specifies that she doesn’t call her Debbie.
“She schooled me on that when I met her,” J said.
She also loves Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Estelle — “I love fierce women that are confident and have big voices,” she said. “I aspire to be just like them.”
7. She’s an amazing cook.
Here’s J’s recipe for skillet lasagna — yes, skillet lasagna exists:
“It’s the easiest thing. You put the onion in first, then you add the tomato sauce — use RAO sauce, it’s expensive — and you break up wht lasagna noodles uncooked. Put them in there, cook for 20 minutes until they get soft. Put dollops of ricotta cheese on either side. Add mozzarella. Cook for 20 minutes with the lid on. Boom, the best lasagna.”
8. She got into singing because of an injury.
Originally a dancer, J tore her ACL and miniscus and got into singing and acting while she recovered.
9. Her favorite body part is the booty.
J works out at Pop Physique to keep hers nice and rounded, and she confesses that she can’t look away when she sees a solid booty in the wild.
“I’m obsessed with butts,” she said. “I saw Amber Rose in person the other night and I was too shy to go up to her. I think she’s brilliant and has a nice, healthy butt.”
Her fascination stems from having grown up a skinny-mini with no bum to speak of, she said. In a high school class, she had to make a vision board and hers revolved around “being a diva” and “being voluptuous.”
“I didn’t have a butt! People that have a butt.. I’m a butt starer,” she said. “I don’t mean to.”
10. She hikes every day.
Living in LA, J has become a huge fan of the mountains. She tries to get a hike in as often as possible to center herself and remind herself to think beyond the superficial.
“The most surprising thing about the entertainment industry is how superficial it really is,” she said. “It’s not as luxurious as it is on TV behind the scenes.”
11. The best moment of her life was performing with PCD at the pyramids in Egypt.
J got to see three of the Great Pyramids lit up with P C D for “Pussycat Dolls” while they performed.
“I couldn’t even believe I was seeing these ancient, beautiful monuments” while performing, she said. “It was surreal.”
