Phoebe Ryan: An L.A. Babe With An East Coast Heart

Opening for Tove Lo was only the very beginning for Phoebe Ryan who is about to become a bonafide pop princess this year. Currently making waves on the West Coast, the L.A. based singer still has some major love for her East Coast roots. We chatted about Phoebe’s early days of dancing to Britney Spears and ‘Nsync, got the scoop on her new music plus we learned why she is all about #treatyourself.

What was it like opening for Tove Lo? Who are some other dream artists you would be honored to perform for?

Oh my gosh, it was amazing. She is the absolute best person and it just felt like a dream sequence that I still do not understand. I think it would be fun to tour with, obviously, Katy Perry. She is badass. I would tour with Britney Spears. I feel like I’m giving the worst answers right now.

No way, not even close. What’s your favorite Britney Spears song?

How do you even choose? I feel like it’s either “I’m A Slave For You” or the super emotional one she wrote herself, “Everytime”?

Yes – I specifically remember it now because of Spring Breakers.

For some reason that song gets me, every time.

Speaking of Britney – I know when I was younger I used to perform around the house singing her songs or Spice Girls songs. Was it the same for you? Was being a pop star always a dream?

I clearly remember doing Darrin’s Dance Grooves for a solid two months of my life. It was that video where the dude that was the choreographer showed you how to do all the dance moves that Britney Spears and ‘Nsync did. I would just watch that tape and just dance because I was absolutely obsessed with ‘Nsync.

Your new single “Dead” is amazing and I feel like 2015 is going to be a big year for you. What else is in store?

People can definitely expect a lot more music and touring. I’m going to be playing a lot, everywhere. I’m going to keep the writing process going very strong.

What do you find to be the key to really owning your live shows?

Just having fun and feeling comfortable is step one. If you can get past the horrible anxiety of being on stage in front of people then you’re doing something right. Step two is just keep doing and keep doing it until you’re the best at it.

Now you’re also killing the style game too – what are some of your wardrobe and beauty essentials?

I always feel like I’m such a mess. My wardrobe is basically t-shirts that my friends don’t want anymore and just stuff from random thrift stores. Every once and a while I’ll ball out and buy something from Opening Ceremony or some other crazy designer I think is cool. I keep it pretty casual because that’s what I feel most comfortable in. Beauty essentials I would say is liquid eyeliner. If you can’t go with liquid eyeliner then you better get out of town.

Besides an amazing Opening Ceremony item, what are some other ways you like to treat yourself?

I am definitely a girl in the sense that I like having my nails done at all times. My manicure has to always be fresh or I feel like the world is going to collapse. I love manicures and pedicures. I like getting massages too. That’s the best thing ever.

Now are you an East Coast Girl or West Coast girl at heart?

I’m always going to be an East Coast girl because that’s where the family is and where the heart is. But I love the West Coast so much. I would have to say I’m bicoastal.
