The Ocean’s Eight trailer finally came out: here’s a breakdown

Here’s an early Christmas gift: after months and months of anticipation, the Ocean’s Eight trailer just dropped!

In the new movie, Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean’s sister. Danny was, of course, played by George Clooney. The plot centers around a heist at the Met Gala. Rounding out the rest of Debbie’s crew are none other than Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, and Helena Bonham Carter.

And possibly Anne Hathaway; we can’t tell if she’s in the crew or not. You’ll see why…

Yes, you read that right. These eight bad-ass women are somehow all in a movie together. And it’s going to be amazing. Sandra has gushed about the dynamic between her and her co-stars, telling Entertainment Weekly, “We all were like, okay, let’s just take care of each other for these six months and relish this opportunity we’re being given.”

And to haters of this all-female film, Sandra says, “We’ve got some feisty women that will fight right back.”

Also important to note: all eight of them have an epic group chat together. Sarah Paulson told Entertainment Tonight, “The things that are going on in this text chain, you would lose your mind.” What we would give to peek inside that chat…

The film features cameos from (get ready…) Anna Wintour, Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Katie Holmes, Olivia Munn, Zayn Malik, Alexander Wang, Zac Posen, Adriana Lima, Hailey Baldwin, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Jason Wu, Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, the Winkelvoss twins…. And definitely many, many more A-listers. That’s just who is rumored to appear.

Here, we break down the trailer in all its glamorous glory:

First of all, the song playing in the background is a cover of Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots are Made for Walking.”

The trailer opens with Debbie at her parole hearing, directly mirroring the start of Ocean’s Eleven, where Danny Ocean (George Clooney) is before his parole board. Debbie tells the board, “If I were to be released, I would, um, just want the simple life. I just want to hold down a job, make some friends…” As images of glamorous gowns and jewels flash on the screen, you knooow she has something planned for as soon as she gets out of prison

And then we see Mindy, Awkwafina, Helena, Rihanna & Sarah in GLAMOUROUS gowns and beautiful earrings. Seriously: that cape-glitter combo on Mindy is stunning. They seem to be arriving at the Met Ball.

Then the trailer flashes to a woman walking on a highway up to a toll booth, which feels very dangerous. This could be Anne Hathaway’s character, or Sandra Bullock’s Debbie. Hard to tell, but our money is on Debbie, because it’s later revealed that Daphne (Anne Hathaway) is the target of the heist.

We see Debbie explaining the heist to Lou (Cate Blanchett) at Veselka, a Ukranian restaurant in the East Village. Is Debbie eating borscht?! Lou asks Debbie, “Why do you need to do this?” Debbie responds, “cause it’s what I’m good at.” Then we finally get introduced to the #Squad…

First up: Amita (Mindy Kaling), a jewelry maker. Debbie asks Amita, “How long would it take you to make seven pieces of jewelry?” Perhaps for the seven members of her team…? She is seen handling lots of jewels, and itching to get away from her Mom. Amita probably has not been involved in crime before, but quickly agrees to work with them.

Then we see Eight Ball (Rihanna) at a laptop, hacking the personnel directory of a company called McCall Sec, which could be short for security… perhaps she is getting into the security cameras of the Met Ball? The directory shows people who work in hardware, install tech, and wireless controls. Other thought: she could be creating fake profiles for members of the team to install their own tech. She introduces herself to Lou as Nine Ball, then corrects it to Eight Ball.

We’re introduced to the third member of the team at a retro fashion show, where Rose (Helena Bonaham Carter) is putting last-minute touches on the outfits. Soon, she is crying to Debbie and Lou, telling them, “I’m going to be really poor.” Lou comforts her and tells her, “what if we could make all of this go away?” That’s the hook for Rose: money. And an escape from her life.

Lou and Debbie go to what looks like Tompkins Square Park — maybe after eating at their favorite Ukrainian place in the East Village, because they are wearing the same outfits (eagle-eyed observers—hello, us!— notice that Lou’s cheetah-print coat was on the back of her chair in the restaurant) — and observe Constance (Awkwafina) do a card trick. Constance then steals their watches, but gives them back… and that’s when we know she’s in too.

Fifth up: Tammy (Sarah Paulson) is preparing a meal in a beautiful house in the suburbs when her phone rings. Peep the wheat grass, protein, and blueberries on the counter: she’s a health nut. Or her significant other is. She tries to say no — “I am with my family, I told you” — but soon discovers that Debbie is in her garage, surrounded by bikes and Keurig cups. Tammy tries to tell Debbie she’s out, but then Debbie tells her how big the job is… and soon we see Tammy packing up and telling her young son, “I’ll be back before you know it.”

Lou, already introduced, is the sixth member and co-team leader with Debbie; they lay out the heist sometime in April. All the women are gathered around a projector to talk about the Met Ball and how they are going to rob it — not the ball itself, but the necklace of Daphne Kluger (played by Anne Hathaway). Daphne’s necklace is valued at over $150 million (!!!!). Flashing on the screen are images of key figures and their titles, like Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief of Vogue. Anna herself will be making an appearance in the film.

And the trailer flashes to the Met Ball, where Daphne walks in, with a man who is wearing a turquoise sash, wwhich designates him as a member of royalty. She kisses hello to Christian Siriano in front of a ton of photographers. In the corner, you can see Rose (Helena Bonaham Carter) — she is part of Daphne’s entourage.

Rose (HBC) puts the jewel necklace on Daphne (Anne). Later, they exit an elevator together: Rose is definitely working for Daphne, but also aiding Debbie and her squad. As Daphne talks about her necklace to Met Ball reporters, Rose stands behind her.

Debbie holds a plastic knife to Claude Becker (played by Richard Armitage)’s stomach. We don’t know why. Maybe she feels jilted by him; but the cast list says Debbie’s ex-lover is played by Damian Lewis. Then we go to the second male to be featured in the trailer: James Corden, playing an insurance investigator, who tells Debbie, “Revenge. It’s a two-fer.” Who is she getting revenge on? Richard Armitage?? Then we see him looking moodily at diamonds under a microscope… maybe he is the eighth member of the squad but low-key hoping Daphne is somehow involved in robbing herself.

Then we get a lot of quick flashes of scenes: we see Lou telling Debbie “do not run a job in a job”; Lou getting on a motorcycle; Eight Ball doing a quick exchange with someone on the street; Daphne flipping her hair and looking at her iPhone; Debbie and Lou walking in some sort of tunnel; Lou putting something in Daphne’s food. We see her sneak into the kitchen and then it flashes to Daphne eating the same dish. WAmita in a small jewelry studio…. which leads us to the conclusion: they steal the necklace while Daphne is in the bathroom with food poisoning. It seems like Amita will quickly have to make a copy of the necklace.

In the run-down of guests, Amita sees Taylor Swift is going to be there. “Can’t we just go to this?” she asks, “Do we have to steal stuff?” Everyone responds, “Yes.” So what we learned about Amita: she’s a pop music fan who likes sparkly things. We bet she listened to “Look What You Made Me Do” on repeat when it came out.

We then see Debbie & Lou in a hotel room with a pile of cash and clothes and accessories strewn about. They clearly have the same working relationship that Danny and Rusty (played by Brad Pitt) have.

Second-to-last frame: Debbie drinking a martini in front of Danny’s grave. So Danny Ocean is dead, or has faked his death… this could be the reason Debbie decides to plan this heist.

One thing we’re confused by: we assumed that Anne Hathaway was going to be part of the Ocean’s 8 crew from that iconic subway photo released earlier this year. The job-within-a-job that Lou warns Debbie about: could it be that Daphne is in on the heist too? That maybe she’s not just a dumb celebrity they’re stealing a necklace from?!

Only time will tell… and we are so ready. Is it June yet?
