FEATURE INTERVIEW:

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMING OUT STORY.

My coming out story is one of gradual self-discovery and acceptance. Growing up in a Catholic family, I served as an altar boy and was deeply involved in the church. The teachings I heard often conflicted with the feelings I had inside, leading to a period of confusion and self-doubt.

As I grew older, I started to realize that being true to myself was essential for my happiness. I sought out supportive friends and communities, and slowly began to accept my identity. When I finally decided to come out to my family, it was a challenging and emotional experience. I shared my truth with them, knowing that their initial reactions might be difficult.

Over time, through open conversations and mutual understanding, my family began to accept me for who I am and not their opinion of who they thought I was. My journey taught me that the opinions of others don’t define my worth. I live authentically, embracing the love and experiences I have lived through my music.

HOW IS YOUR MUSIC DISRUPTING THE SPACE OF QUEER LATIN X MUSIC?

My music is in the process of disrupting the space of queer Latinx music by infusing my Caribbean roots and a mix of reggaetón, reggae, and salsa, which vividly reflect where I come from. Puerto Rico is now embracing the diversity of its artists, allowing us to fully express ourselves, and I’m proud to be part of this movement.

Through my music, I create a space where queer Latinx voices are not only heard but celebrated, breaking traditional boundaries and redefining what it means to be a queer artist in the Latinx community. By blending these rich, vibrant sounds with contemporary elements, I bridge cultural heritage with modern expression, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance for all.

WHO ARE YOUR HEREOS?

My siblings but also the artists who have fearlessly paved the way for cultural and social change. Their ability to use their platforms to help marginalized people.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR 16-YEAR-OLD SELF?

Embrace who you are fully and unapologetically. Trust yourself and your journey, you are a master number. The obstacles you face are temporary, and they will make you stronger. Surround yourself with people who support and uplift you. Believe in your dreams and never be afraid to pursue them. Most importantly, love yourself for exactly who you are, because you are worthy of happiness and success.

WHAT LYRIC FROM YOUR SONG HITS HOME?

“Me convirtio en usario. Tu loba en el armario.” And “Por qué te niegas si tu conmigo volaste?”

TALK TO US ABOUT BEING A GAY LATIN X RISING MUSICIAN WHAT HAS BEEN TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS?

There’s a pervasive belief in society that men should conform to strict stereotypes of masculinity, which includes being the primary breadwinners and upholding traditional gender roles. This often leads to discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals who don’t fit into these norms. It’s crucial to challenge these harmful beliefs and promote gender equality and inclusivity.

One of the everyday challenges is the stigma around simple acts of affection, such as two men holding hands in public. In many places, this can lead to stares, or even verbal harassment. It reminds me of the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ acceptance and the importance of visibility in breaking down these barriers. Unfortunately, prejudice and discomfort towards same-sex couples are still prevalent in many communities. This can range from micro-aggressions to overt discrimination and violence. It’s disheartening to see the impact of these prejudices on individuals.

Despite these challenges, learning your place as an artist allows me to use my platform to advocate for love, acceptance, and diversity. Through my music, I aim to inspire others to embrace their true selves and challenge societal norms that limit individual expression. I believe that by sharing our stories and experiences, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate world for everyone.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

Overall, I’m proud of being part of a movement that challenges societal norms and promotes love, diversity, and inclusivity.

WHAT DOES PRIDE MEAN TO YOU?

Pride is about solidarity and community. It’s a time to come together with angels who share similar experiences and to support one another. It’s about visibility, raising awareness, and advocating for the rights and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide.

HOW WILL YOU SPEND MIAMI PRIDE?

I plan to spend Pride actively participating in events that celebrate our community, which not only provide fun but also opportunities to connect with other LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.  Pride is also a time to connect with friends, allies, socializing, networking, and building solidarity within the community. My goal for Miami Pride is to celebrate our achievements, honor our history, and continue the fight for equality and acceptance.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU?

As an artist, I am focused on further developing my sound and storytelling through music. This journey allows me to continue disrupting and expanding the space of queer Latinx music, contributing to the movement of acceptance and self-discovery.

Next, I am preparing to release another single, followed by my EP titled ‘Sin Pasaje De Vuelta’. This project is a significant step in my career, where I aim to share my personal journey and artistic evolution with the world. This journey is not just about my growth as an artist but also about making a positive impact on the world through the transformative power of music.
