Meryl Streep Spoke Up Against Trump and He’s PISSED

Just when you were beginning to think, “good god, Golden Globes, wrap it up already,” Meryl Streep got onstage in a bedazzled dress and said some things about Trump which pissed off a lot of conservative people, Trump included.

Receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Meryl didn’t waste any time talking about how she wanted to thank God and her agent, she went straight to her political point.

“Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press,” Meryl began. “You and all of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. Think about it. Hollywood, foreigners and the press.”

Correct, Meryl. Hollywood is full of people Donald Trump, and the conservatives who love him, hates.

“There were many, many, many powerful performances this year,” Meryl continued, “[but] there was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart, not because it was good. There was nothing good about it. But it was effective and did its job.”

Burn, Meryl.

She went on to specifically criticize “the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country,” for imitating a “disabled reporter,” because “when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose” before asking all the famous people in the room to support the Committee to Protect Journalists, “because we’re going to need them going forward.”

To refresh your memory, Meryl was referring to an incident which happened back in November 2015 when Trump mentioned reporter Serge Kovaleski, who just so happens to have arthrogryposis, a condition which limits the movement of his joints, at a campaign rally.

This was right after Trump claimed he watched “thousands and thousands of people cheering” on September 11th, and he used an article written by Kovaleski, in which Kovaleski wrote “a number of people” were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks, to defend his statement.

When asked by the Washington Post Fact Checker whether Kovaleski had meant he saw thousands of people cheering when he said a number of people, Kovaleski denied it saying, “I certainly do not remember anyone saying that thousands or even hundreds of people were celebrating. That was not the case, as best as I can remember.”

So Trump told his followers at a campaign rally, “You gotta see this guy,” and launched into a flailing physicality as he shouted, “Ahh, I don’t know what I said! Ahh, I don’t remember!”

Honestly, the whole thing was pretty standard token political speech at at an awards show content on Meryl’s part, but people got pissed about it because people get pissed about everything these days.

And nobody gets more pissed about people criticizing Trump than Trump himself.

“Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes,” Donald ranted on Twitter, continuing:

“She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter {would never do that) but simply showed him “groveling” when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media.”

At the risk of sounding elitist, I’d just like to point out that overrated isn’t a hyphenated word, but the phrase 16-year-old is.

Also, just for the record, Trump claims he wasn’t mocking the reporter for his disabilities so much as doing an impression of “what I thought would be a flustered reporter trying to get out of a statement he made long ago,” but we’ll let you be the judge of that.
