Why Men And Women Can Never Be ‘Just Friends’

Men and women can’t ever be friends because the sex part will always get in the way.

I think I was in an aim chat with friends when I first heard this line from When Harry Met Sally. Of course I thought, what the hell does that even mean? I have plenty of guy friends and I don’t sleep with any of them. Not only that, but I would have to be desperate as f*ck to sleep with one of them.

But growing up I finally understood what Billy Crystal meant and that he may be right on the money with this theory. Basically saying when you initially meet someone, you usually think about sleeping with them. But men and women can’t ever really be friends because (spoiler alert) boys f*ck it up. Literally. No, like they will actually f*ck you.

Even if a girl is not attractive, he will still hit it. Don’t believe me? Let’s do a quick play-by-play scenario of a guy when he’s out.

Sober Man: “I would never have sex with her.”

Man After A Shot: “Ehhhh, I don’t know dude.”

Man After 3 Drinks: “It’s a possibility.”

Drunk Man: “Do you still have her number? I think I’ll see what she’s up to.”

And then bam, it’s the end of a friendship and the beginning of a fling. If you’re lucky it’ll be your guy friend you’ve been crushing on since forever. Maybe you two will even start to date. Have a killer story to tell your kids how you two met. Who knows.

Or it may never happen again and  you will always think of that one night when you and your so called guy friend hooked up. And possibly ruined the friendship. And maybe deleted each other from Instagram after. Maybe blocked his number. Also, who knows.

Sure, most of us manage to make it work though and continue to carry on being friends. Some of us even form a stronger bond because seeing someone naked can do that. But in the end, the sex part will always get in the way. Which is why it’s nice to have your gal friends. Unless you’re a lesbian. Then just read this backwards.
