Matt & Kim Release New Album And Still Rep Brooklyn
Everybody’s favorite indie duo, Matt and Kim, will release their new album, New Glow on April 7th. Known for their energetic concerts and upbeat jams, the couple is also starting their tour off the week after their album’s released—rather than wait until they’re in our city to get our fill (uh, except I’ve already purchased my tickets), we caught up with Matt to chat a little about Brooklyn, Beyonce and which of them is the bigger diva.
Why is your name not Kim and Matt?
I need to get something, you know. Onstage, Kim is such a presence, so I needed to get some sort of consolation prize. Also, as visually-minded people, we just thought it looked better.
I see that you love music videos. What’s your favorite music video? What’s your favorite movie?
I came from a film school background, and I worked in film and video, so now I’m combining that with my first love, which is music. I love things that are really simple. If I had to think of one of recent, it would be the Tyler the Creator’s “Yonkers” video. I remember loving the idea of White Stripes, “Fell In Love With A Girl” video with the lego blocks. We like the idea of simple videos that are fun to execute.
Are you guys influenced by the White Stripes?
In the end, no. Musically, they come from such a rock and roll place; I love their songs, but other than the fact that we’re also a duo, and also maybe that both Jack and I have kind of weird voices, I wouldn’t think of them as an influence. At least, not yet. Just in an energy sense, comparisons being made makes sense. I mean, because there are two of us, and the music is also kind of raw, with imperfections. I’m really glad they exist.
Beyonce or Rihanna?
Kim is a huge Beyonce fan. Once, Kim flew from Los Angeles to Brooklyn specifically to see Beyonce and then flew back that night. I do love Rihanna’s “Stay” though, I love the bridge in that. Do I really have to choose one?
No, you definitely don’t! But since we’re on the subject, who is the bigger diva, Matt or Kim?
I think that’s part of why we function so well together, is that neither of us fall into the diva category at all. I think any couple who spends a fraction of the time we spend together would probably explode. But you know, our personalities are just like–we try to be as friendly in our interpersonal interactions as possible. I think we’re head-to-head. I know that sometimes people equate being a diva with wanting to get things right, and I don’t think that’s fair. There’s no room in the world to not do the absolute best job you can.
What songs are you guys listening to right now?
We’re big fans of pop and top 40 hip-hop. We love stuff with a good amount of energy. Meek Mill has has a song called “Dreams and Nightmares”, which I know is on Kim’s playlist for when she wants to get pumped for a show. Then on a very polar, different side, there’s this guy from Brooklyn called Kevin Morby, who played in a band called Baby, and there’s a bunch of his stuff. I love.
Do you still live in Brooklyn?
We do. We just braved the freezing cold winter in Brooklyn. I don’t know, it’s weird, I grew up in Vermont, and we travel all the time, so I’m never really anywhere for more than a day. We bought a house here, so we’re probably going to be here for a while.
