Kailey Flyte Is A Pink-Haired Barbie With A Dreamy Vision For Fall Fashion
When describing beauty blogger Kailey Flyte’s style to my boyfriend the other day, I was temporarily at a loss for how to describe her vintage and pastel-hued look. Finally, after what felt like minutes, I came across the perfect phrase, “she looks like Lolita and Barbie had a love child.”
With her trademark pink hair and innocently pouted lips, Kailey Flyte looks like she would be perfectly at home in both Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” music video, or in the backyard of her Portland, Oregon home, eating ice cream and hanging out with her friends.
We talked to Kailey Flyte about her blog, Mermaidens, the importance of experimenting when it comes to developing your personal style, and what fall fashion would look like if she was in charge.
Unsurprisingly, her dreamy vision of fall doesn’t have anything to do with pumpkin spiced lattes and sweaters.
You just moved right, how was that?
Incredibly stressful and I almost lost my favorite coat in the progress – but we are finally all moved in and my coat is safe and sound, thank goodness!
What was the first thing you unpacked?
My computer, haha! I had a deadline 😉
When people first meet you, what do they think?
I honestly have no idea! Hopefully I come across as a goofy but genuine person with good style?
What would a perfect day look like to you?
Planning, modeling, or styling for a photoshoot, petting lots of cats, hanging out with friends, watching a good movie with my family, and eating fruit and ice cream.

How long have you had your blog, Mermaidens?
I started in summer of 2011.
What inspired you to start blogging?
I was going through a rough patch and wanted to channel my creativity in something more concrete!
What have you learned about yourself through blogging?
I’m really inquisitive and resilient – I do the best I can without fancy equipment and trying to teach everything myself.
What’s your favorite thing about fall?
Thigh high socks and berets!

What staple pieces do you think every girl should have to prepare herself?
I don’t believe in rules when it comes to personal style – there is no such thing as one size fits all sizes or rules and I think it’s up to you to decide what pieces you should have!
Do you have any predictions as to what the biggest trends will be?
I think trends go in cycles, so probably more florals for spring and more plaid for fall!
If you could dictate what fall fashion would look like, what would you choose?
Well I *would* love to see more pastel coats around…!
How would you describe your style?
Retro pink haired Barbie paperdoll came to life and is gleefully playing with new styles and trends.
What’s your favorite era to channel in your outfits?
I love to play with the 60s influence – I love opaque tights, pointy shoes, and bold eye makeup.
Do you have a favorite designer? Samantha Pleet, HKM, Lazy Oaf, and Moschino based purely on that Barbie collection…!
What’s in your purse right now?
Sunscreen, my phone, and makeup!
What fictional character’s closet would you most want to raid?
What’s your favorite outfit you’ve ever had?
I love this question! I have different favorite outfits for my different moods – this outfit with a suspender skirt makes me feel really confident and put together, I’ve worn it on several occasions where I’m extremely nervous and it has definitely helped. I also love my watermelon shorts and cupcake bikini (with inflatable donut pool float!) looks for when I want to achieve ultimate cartoon character looks!
Has there been any fashion trend you’re embarrassed to have gotten into when you were growing up?
Growing up I didn’t really play with trends because I was stuck in a rut wearing just t-shirts and jeans – I kind of regret not having that period of experimentation!

What gets you up in the morning?
The thought that something really amazing might happen could happen!
What’s your biggest virtue?
I’m extremely loyal.
What’s your biggest vice?
I cry easily.
And last but not least, what’s your favorite quote?
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou
