Galore Darling: Lola Blanc Talks Beats And Britney Spears
Rising singer/songwriter Lola Blanc, is definitely one to watch this year. This buzzing musician has acquired such credits as writing for Britney Spears. Galore fave photographer Daniella Defoe was able to take some dope shots of her and ask her some questions about Lola’s career. Check it out!
When did you first start singing and acting?
I started writing songs when I was 9 or so, and kind of just knew that was what I wanted to do after that. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Acting came later, but I love film so much. I want to be a part of it – and ideally find a way to combine the two.
Your style is very unique and fun, how would you describe it and what are your inspirations?
Other people have called it “eccentric glamour” and “technicolor rockabilly,” which I think are apt. So many different things inspire me – John Waters movies & 50s kitsch, 90s fashion, sci-fi and horror, pop art, the extravagance of people like Isabella Blow and Daphne Guinness. Old Hollywood glamour.
Top five records?
1.) When the Pawn… by Fiona Apple. This album meant so so much to me as a teenager and still does. Nobody speaks to my aching heart like Fiona.
2.) The Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack! It makes me instantly happy and nostalgic and excited about love.
3.) Rain Dogs, by Tom Waits. Just everything I love about Tom Waits.
4.) MJ’s Thriller. My mom and I used to come up with dance routines with our ventriloquist puppets to these songs. Obviously that’s not the only reason I think Thriller is great, but it helps.
5.) The Joshua Tree by U2. It makes things feel a little more meaningful somehow.
Five goals on your life’s to-do list?
1.) Make something truly great. Not just trendy or enjoyable, but great.
2.) Win a Grammy (duh).
3.) Star in a really, really good good movie musical.
4.) Have a family. One day!
5.) Eat a diet consisting of food that isn’t Reese’s Puffs?
If you could throw the ultimate party tell me what it would be like.
So does that mean it has to involve more than Netfix and five of my friends? I’ve actually always wanted to throw a legit, high-end, Willy Wonka/magic themed party. Like, where everything that could possibly be edible is, and if there’s not a chocolate river there’s at least a giant chocolate fountain. There’d be illusions and magic trickery everywhere too, and lots of dry ice, and spooky jazz music. That’s my kind of party. I’m like a kid.
If you could be any fictional character who would you choose?
Clementine from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I know she’s a trainwreck, but such a beautiful trainwreck.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
People who aren’t close to me don’t know that I’ve never had an intentional sip of alcohol – never. I’ve also never smoked anything or taken any kind of drug. I’m not in recovery, not straight edge, it just never occurred to me to start and I guess I like it that way so far.
How would you describe your basic life philosophy?
Live honestly, with others and with myself. Brutally, heartbreakingly honestly. It’s amazing, the lies we can tell ourselves to avoid pain or to justify our cognitive dissonance, and ultimately it’s so much worse and it’s something I never want to do again. The more I learn to face reality, and the more I tell people the truth, no matter how terrifying it is at first, the closer I get to actual happiness. And the better my art gets.
What is your spirit animal?
What can we expect from you in 2014?
An EP! I’m so excited! It’s going to be more urban than the music I’ve previously put out, but very me. Music videos! Collaborations! Lots of fun stuff ahead.
