Interview: Ashley Smith Talks New Clothing Line for RVCA
Our very first, original, primary, (and all other synonymous words) cover girl Ashley Smith is launching her spring 2014 line for clothing brand RVCA, and we are awfully proud of her. Her new line is a spin on the typical more sport oriented apparel from RVCA. Ashley’s collection incorporates youth and subculture to brings us a refreshing and engaging line that appeals to young women. She set aside some time to talk to us in more depth about her exciting new designs.
What is your inspiration behind the collection?
I wanted to make a collection that tied into my personal style to create a line of classic essentials with a dash of teen spirit. It was important to me that my friends would love to wear the collection I designed. I took references from some of my favorite movies Cry Baby and Clueless. I love color so I kept the palette very vibrant and fun.
How did the collaboration come about with RVCA
I met Pat Tenore, the owner of RVCA through mutual friends. I was instantly inspired by the group of professional skate boarders, artists and designers that Pat worked with. I expressed my interest in joining the Artist Network Program (ANP) and a few months later flew out to Costa Mesa, California (RVCA’s headquarters) to meet the team. I knew once I arrived at the RVCA headquarters (which is covered in street art and even has a boxing ring) that I was home!
How was life like growing up in Texas?
Growing up in Austin was very different from New York City. Austin has these beautiful watering holes and scenic trails but at the same time has a great music and nightlife scene. I was a concert junkie for sure. Austin also has some of the best vintage stores in America, which helped me to truly define my personal style at a young age.
What do you love most about modeling and how has that helped you as a designer?
What I love about modeling is the opportunities that have risen including the ability to travel all over the world, experience new cultures, and learn new languages. My experience so far has been very eye opening and I feel very fortunate. I believe my experiences have helped me refine my style, which I have translated into my first capsule collection with RVCA. A mix of sweet but tough pieces that are the perfect basics for every girl!
What kind of girl do you see wearing this collection?
I designed the collection to be versatile as this is my take on “essential” items every girl should own. The girl who wears my collection is unique, vibrant, likes to have a good time and loves to show off her personality through her wardrobe.
Where can we order and shop the collection?
The collection will be available at select retailers and online at www.rvca.com
What is the most essential thing every girl should have?
A great fitting leather jacket and a pair of skinny black jeans.
What your beauty regiment?
My beauty regiment is pretty standard. I moisturize in the morning and us BB cream. A little mascara, a dash of shimmer powder on my eyelids, and a pinky lip moisturizer to top off the look. I like to go for a natural look and use make-up to subtly enhance my features.
Favorite spot in NYC at the moment?
I just moved into a new apartment in the East Village, which is currently my favorite spot. I am a homebody during the winter but I also love Masion O.
What are your plans for 2014 and can we expect more designs in the future?
Absolutely, this collection is the first of six capsules with RVCA!
