This Instagram Account Proves How Stylish Barbie, And Real Girls, Look In Hijabs
You’ve met “Curvy Barbie”—she landed the cover of Time Magazine last week. You follow Hipster Barbie on Instagram, laughing along with her as she ironically and adorably makes fun of all the people you hate. We introduced Naima Abdi, the Muslim model speaking out against stereotypes of Islam in America. Now, meet Hijarbie, the hottie showing us just how fashionable hijabs can be, and highlighting how important it is to quit perpetuating the stigma surrounding the religious costume.
The account was created by Haneefah Adam, a 24-year-old girl living in Nigeria, who came up with the idea while working on her master’s degree last year. Adam began photographing Barbie in traditional garb in order to inspire girls around the world to feel good in their own skin, regardless of religion. One of the coolest parts of the account is the addition of actual girls to the images, showing that idealized images of girls presented by toys do translate to the real world.

“It’s important to create a sense of value in the Muslim child, especially the girl child,” Adam told Mic during an interview. “They become more confident, more driven, they believe more in themselves, which leads to an appreciation of herself and her modest lifestyle and upbringing. Instead of dressing up her dolls in clothes she wouldn’t wear, hijabifying it will create a sense of belonging and hopefully make a positive impact.”
