This is the first time white men weren’t nominated for the Album of the Year award

History is being made folks, because in the 2018 grammys category for Album of the Year, no white men were nominated.

The line up for Album of the Year are Childish Gambino for late-2016 release “Awaken My Love!”; Jay-Z for “4:44”; Kendrick Lamar for “DAMN.”; Lorde for “Melodrama”; and Bruno Mars for “24K Magic.”

Twitter user Dani Deahl was the first to point out that the Grammys has been celebrated for over 60 years and this is the first time this scenario has ever happened.

People are pointing out that in 1999, there were only women in the Album of the Year category (Sheryl Crow, Lauryn Hill, Garbage, Madonna, and Shania Twain). Now, even though it seems like there weren’t any white men in that category, there was. The band Garbage is filled with white men, but their lead singer is Shirley Manson which is why it was overlooked. So technically, the 1999 Grammys doesn’t count (in this case).

This is a win for minorities everywhere. The Grammys have clearly come a long way from their racist history with their four artist of color nominations. Only 10 black artists have ever won Album of the Year in the history of the Grammys. Compare that to the amount of white men who have won and you will see how disproportionate the results are.

This resurgence of diversity might have something to do with 2016 and 2017 Grammy awards, where two artists of color (Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar) were unfairly snubbed for album of the year in favor of two white women (Adele and Taylor Swift). When Adele accepted her award, even she was confused about winning, because she felt that Beyonce rightfully deserved it.

Also in the Best New Artist category, whoever wins will either be a woman (Julia Michaels, Sza or Alessia Cara) or an African-American man (Khalid or Lil Uzi Vert). No white male in sight over here.

This year definitely signifies a change in the times, and we are all the way here for it.
