John O’ Callaghan Satisfies Our Sweet Tooth With The Maine’s New Album ‘American Candy’
There are some celebrity crushes that seem to grow up with you. If you loved Leonardo DiCaprio, you got to see him transform from the cutie on the Titanic to the poster man for the “dad bod.” If you were a pop-punk fan, you probably had a crush on John O’Callaghan from The Maine. Just like you’ve ditched your fake clip-in pink hair extensions and grown out of your Warped Tour ’08 tee shirt, The Maine has been growing up too. Their latest album, ‘American Candy,’ delves into much more thought-provoking topics and mature sounds than what you used to listen to on your iPod Mini.
While many things have changed since the days of ‘The Way We Talk’, one thing probably hasn’t- the fact that John is still sexy as hell. We sat down with him to find out what ideas went into the latest album, why he’s still so shy around girls, and a warning for his future girlfriend.
“I feel like in society a lot of choices are made for you when it comes to entertainment and popular culture.”
What’s the meaning behind the title of your album, ‘American Candy?’
A lot of it stems from my distaste with the way that things are forced upon me. I feel like in society a lot of choices are made for you when it comes to entertainment and popular culture. I think it’s just me vocalizing or at least acknowledging the over-saturation of rubbish that is fed to us.
What’s your favorite candy?
I’m not a big sweets guy. I like anything salty-sweet, like not too sweet.
Like chocolate covered pretzels?
Yeah, anything to do with peanut butter too.
Do you prefer ‘English Girls’ or American girls?
I’m just going to say girls in general.
What’s the worst pick-up line you’ve ever used?
Oh man, probably something when I was too inebriated. That’s usually when those words would come out. I don’t really talk to girls, if I do it’s very brief.
Do you feel that you vocalize your feelings about girls through your songs instead?
I think some of it, yeah. Some of it can be metaphorical. The notion of love is one of the most relatable sentiments. It’s easier to dress it up that way and present it in that fashion. Some of it has to do with girls and some is kind of all over the place.
How do you usually pursue a girl if you are into her, albeit your shyness?
It’s been a really long time. I don’t know, I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t have to do with physical attraction- but a lot has to do with the way with words. There’s so much to be said for a well spoken person. I suppose conversation is the initial approach.
In the song ‘Am I Pretty?’ you touch on themes of natural vs. artificial beauty, what inspired that?
I think a lot of it had to do with my perception of how it would be to be a teenager in society these days. I think we put a lot of emphasis on the way we look and dress, and the way we maintain ourselves. I think it would be really difficult to be a young person today. Fortunately, I’ve gotten out of that malleable phase.
What’s your biggest turn off?
Vanity. I suppose when I hear people talk only about themselves, it reminds me of those parents in little league who think that their kid is the greatest and everything they do is spectacular. A little humility goes a long way with me.
Would you ever date a fan?
It’s really hard in my position, especially being 8 years into this. The struggle that I have is trying to break down whether or not the person that I’m talking to is talking to me because of my personality and who I am as opposed to who they see on stage. That’s a really tough thing. I would definitely date someone who gives a shit about what I’m doing. Fanatical and crazy? Might be weird. I think it’s important to be involved and care about what someone else that you’re enjoying does. I would say yes, long and short of it.
“I’ve stopped feeling guilty about the shit that I enjoy.”
Do you feel that the person you are on stage is different then the person you are when you’re just chilling?
Yeah, I’m much more reserved. I don’t really like attention, I never did. It’s kind of interesting because I’m in that position now. I think I’ve learned a lot about how to carry myself on stage. I wouldn’t say I’m putting on an act. I think if you really got to know me you would understand how I really am. I just think that I am timid when I’m unaware of a person and their intentions. On the surface when you meet me I’m pretty shy, but my good friends that I’ve had since sixth grade would say otherwise.
What’s the last show that you watched on Netflix?
I got a couple episodes into House of Cards. I don’t really watch it on the road, we have shitty internet.
What’s the sexiest thing that a girl can wear?
I don’t know…I think girls can be sexy in so many different outfits that it would be hard to pinpoint just one. I’ve seen girls be sexy in giant tee-shirts.
What’s your favorite love song?
‘Here I Am’ by Al Green.
What song should Galore add to our sex playlist?
If not that Al Green tune… actually add that one, it’s a great track.
What’s the weirdest thing a girl has asked for in bed?
I’m not a huge fan of the choking stuff.
It weirds you out?
To a certain degree, but when it gets too weird.. there’s definitely a line. When it’s crossed it’s really strange.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
I stopped answering this because I’ve stopped feeling guilty about the shit that I enjoy.
What warning do you have for your future girlfriend?
I can drink too much.
You need to find a girl that can drink as much as you then!
There you go, yeah. Or one that doesn’t drink at all.
If we’re going to visit Arizona what’s a must-see or must-do?
I could say the Grand Canyon but that’s kind of…
Yeah, basic. The downtown area is flourishing once again so there’s been a reformation of really cool restaurants and really great places to get drinks. I would head to downtown Phoenix. I live in Chandler which is the outskirts.
What are your plans for after tour?
I bought a car not too long ago, I bought a Jeep so I’m going to go camping and do a lot of outdoors-y stuff.
Not going to be stuck in this tour bus anymore?
Yeah exactly, go be in nature, try to grow a beard.
