Fast Food’s Freak Flag Is Flying With These 6 New Items
Do you know what my favorite thing about Memorial Day Weekend is?
It’s not getting a tan, or hanging with distant relatives at a BBQ, and it’s definitely not running into old high school classmates at beach bars. Nope, my favorite part of MDW – or any long weekend for that matter – is the road trips. And not because I truly enjoy sitting in a hot car in traffic for hours listening to emo music, but because road trips are a great excuse to eat fast food for once.
Or, if you already eat fast food pretty frequently, it’s a great excuse to try something new!
Most of your fave fast food places have been trying to be innovative and go viral with their latest menu item, so ditch your “usual” order and try something new this weekend. If it sucks, you can always drive to the next fast food joint that’s one block over in the rest stop park.
1. Dairy Queen’s Treatzza Pizza
In an ode to the 90s, Dairy Queen is bringing back one of their hawt 90s items which launched earlier this week. It’s called the Treatzza Pizza, and you might not remember it (I sure don’t), but it looks delicious if not nostalgic.
It’s basically a frozen dessert made to look like a pizza that involves a fudge cookie crust and vanilla ice cream “sauce.” They have four different flavors: Choco Brownie, Reese’s, M&M, and Heath. Sounds like a lit summer treat to me.
2. Dunkin’ Donuts Cake Batter Donut
Okay, so you can’t try this on your way down to the beach, but you can try it on the way back. Dunkin’ is releasing a cake batter donut on the 29th (a.k.a Monday). It’s filled with vanilla cake batter, topped with chocolate icing and confetti sprinkles. Even if it doesn’t totally cure your MDW hangover, it sounds very Instagrammable! And what might just help your hangover is their S’mores flavor swirls launching the same day, which will add S’mores flavor to any coffee drink of your choice.
3. Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Tacos
If you haven’t tried one of these yet, what you been doing? JK, I haven’t even tried one yet, shame on me.
But, if you haven’t cuz you’re broke AF, we have good news. Taco Bell announced that they’ll be giving away free Doritos Locos Tacos in June based on the results of the NBA Finals.
“If the road team wins Game 1, Game 2, or Game 3, America will get a free Doritos Locos Taco on Tuesday, June 13, from 2 to 6 p.m. However, if the road team wins Game 4, Game 5, Game 6, or Game 7, fans (of tacos or basketball) will get a free taco on Tuesday, June 20, from 2 to 6 p.m,” they said.
So basically, unless the road team really sucks, everyone’s going to get a free taco at least one day! Or, you could skip all that nonsense and spend the $2 on a taco this weekend.
4. Starbucks S’Mores Frapp
Starbucks may not be your typical fast food spot, but they dot tons of rest stops along the highways ’round these parts. It’s also the perfect place to stop when you’re about to fall asleep after hearing “Malibu” on the radio for the sixth time in a row.
What better way to caffeinate your ass up than with their new and limited time only S’mores Frappuccino? Yes, S’mores seems to be a theme this summer. Or, if that’s not your bag, you can just ask for a Unicorn Frapp and make the barista hate you because you’ll probs never have to go to that Starbucks again!
5. McDonald’s McFlurries
You may not know this, but McDonald’s has been slowly working its way back into your heart.
JK, it never left. But, they’re upping the game by changing more and more menu items to be free of all the shit you probs shouldn’t be ingesting.
One thing that they’ve completely revamped in all their locations? Their vanilla ice cream. It’s now free of artificial flavors and preservatives, and most people can’t notice a difference in taste. Sure, that doesn’t exactly make an Oreo McFlurry healthy…but close enough! Besides, it’s a summer staple!
6. KFC’s Nashville Hot Chicken
Ah, my personal favorite fast food joint is KFC forever and ever. But, if you’re looking for a change from the classic fried chicken, they launched a spicier version called the Nashville Hot that’s officially available nationwide and in the UK now.
It involves a paprika and cayenne seasoning, and trust me, you’re going to want to make sure you buy a water bottle too because they’re not f-ing around when they say “hot.” Assuming you’re into spicy shit, you’re going to love it.
