DJ Val Fleury Shares Her Cruel Summer Poolside Playlist
Mega-babe and ultra-talented DJ/producer, Val Fleury is taking over summer. As an L.A. queen, she knows better than anyone else that the best place to party is right in the city of angels. Her remix of the classic Bananarama song “Cruel Summer”, also covered by Ace of Bace, is on our short-list of summer anthem contenders. Next Sunday she will be DJing the hottest pool party of the summer at The Standard in Hollywood. Val Fleury made us the sickest exclusive playlist for poolside partying and let us into her beautiful world.
What elements make up your perfect summer party?
Whatever elements they’re putting in my Margarita or Piña Colada.
Do you consider yourself the life of the party?
Yassss darlingggg yassssssss!
What’s the secret to putting on the most killer DJ set?
I like to have an arsenal of newer songs that I’m crazy about, it’s probably about 25%. The rest of it is simply reading the room. I love the thrill of that, connecting with everyone on the dance floor and just going on a musical journey – regardless of era, geography or genre. You’ll usually see me loosing my shit dancing during my sets! It’s important for a DJ to have fun, people feed off of you and it helps in creating a killer experience for everyone there.
Why is L.A. the ‘hottest’ place to be in the summer?
Because LA has some of the dopest pool parties! This summer, I’m curating the Cruel Summer pool party series at The Standard, Hollywood. It’s good weather, good music, good people and good vibes… poolside!
Why choose the song “Cruel Summer” to remix?
For this remix, I took inspiration from the Bananarama tune, one of my favorite songs, but sampled the Ace Of Base vocals. It’s so much fun making, digging for, and playing new takes on tracks from the ’80s and ’90s. I’m an ’80s baby and the ’90s was so important for me, and that was when my family moved to the U.S. That 20-year span produced so many amazing and influential tunes, in every genre.
What is something you want everyone to know about you?
Two of the favorite things in life are ginger babies and Shia LaBeouf.
