EDM Boss DJ Helena Takes Charge Of Her Powerhouse Brand

The EDM world is lucky to have DJ Helena, a female powerhouse with nothing but energetic sets. Between old school mixing styles and electro-progressive production, Helena is able to control her crowd with her magnetizing stage presence. With her latest single “Boss,” it’s clear of one thing: Helena knows her power and she’s not afraid to use it. If you’re not partying with DJ Helena and her enchanting charisma, you’re missing out. We chatted about what it’s like to build a brand as a female within EDM culture, the struggles of tour life, and her new music style she’s using to stay ahead of the times. See what she had to say, below.

How has being a female in a male-dominated genre affected the way you work? Or the way you’ve developed your brand?

I have always tried to not pay attention to that. I am naturally a tomboy and I have never been a girly girl, but I’ve always wanted people to see my brand the same as they would any respected male artist. It should be irrelevant what sex you are, but unfortunately this industry can still be very sexist. I have tried to keep the attention on my music first and foremost. But there are still hurdles.

Who came up with the Helena logo/graphic? Its very aesthetically pleasing.

A talented designer in Australia designed my logo working closely with my sketches. I went through 8 designers before I was happy with my logo. It’s a hard thing to come up with. The way it looks represents your brand. so it has to suit.

You’re very active during a DJ set, how do you stay fit? How do you exercise? (Do you exercise?)

I exercise as much as I can, I do a mix of weights, boxing, cross fit and yoga. It’s very hard to be consistent when you travel so much. Airport food, lack of sleep and travel really effect my momentum. But I do try to stay fit as best I can because my sets are energetic. I get a great workout from dj’ing!

So how are you a “Boss”?

I think any person that takes control of their lives and goes after what they want out of life is a boss. I am extremely independent and motivated. I travel the world by myself every week going after my dreams. I think that is worthy of a boss status.

How did the collaboration with Vassy come about?

Vassy is also an Australian artist, although we only actually met in LA through a mutual friend. But we started sending some ideas back and forth to each other and Boss was born.

First paid DJ gig?

My first paid gig was in the UK playing house in a back room of a big club, I got paid 50 pounds and was so stoked. I couldn’t believe someone actually paid me for doing something I loved doing.

What’s the hardest aspect of your job?

The hardest aspect is the lack of sleep and the travel, it’s all very tough on your body. I have been trying to shake the flu now for 3 weeks, it’s hard to recover when you are having to tour so heavily and can’t rest. The show must go on as they say!

The most fun part?

The most fun part is the performance itself, playing your music to crowds worldwide and seeing people who genuinely love and are into what you work so hard doing. It’s special very special! I don’t ever take it for granted.

Take us through your days off: when you’re not DJ-ing how do you like to spend your time?

I love watching tv series, I am a bit of a geek. Otherwise I’m probably shopping, eating or at the gym. I don’t have much of a social life because I’m always traveling, but I love going for a nice dinner with some of my closest friends. Most of my time not actually dj-ing though is spent working on music, studio, writing and downloading–edits you can never spend enough time on it.

What’s next for Helena in the rest of 2015 and beyond?

I am going though a slight transition at the moment with my music and style. I feel it’s important to move with the times and stay on top of your game, so I am working quietly away on this right now. At the same time, I’m also touring heavily across the U.S, Asia and Australia. I’m staying super busy with things. I have big plans for this year! It’s an exciting time and I feel positive about where I’m headed.
