“Dear Daddy, One Day I Will Be Called a Whore”

In the classic film, Mean Girls, Ms. Norbury asks, “who here has been called a slut or a whore?” The entire female population in the gymnasium raises their hands. Not every girl appears to be our generation’s “stereotype” of a whore, i.e: dressed provocatively, pretty, or curvy. But, every single girl raises their hand.

Mean Girls was filmed in 2004, but nearly 12 years later, not much has changed. If you’re reading this, you’ve certainly been called a slut or a whore, whether it was behind your back or to your face. Think back to the first time you were called a slut. It probably wasn’t because you slept with someone, or even kissed someone. It was probably because you started developing breasts, or because you wore a short skirt. Maybe it was because you denied a boy who had a crush on you, or someone’s boyfriend said “hello” to you. It doesn’t matter if you “deserved” to be called a slut or not, the reality is that “slut” and “whore” are simply the easiest insults to throw at a female.

To quote Ms. Norbury again, girls need to “stop calling each other sluts and whores, it only makes it okay for guys to call you sluts and whores.” This is certainly a large contribution to the “slut” epidemic, girls calling each other sluts. Perhaps it’s out of jealousy, or disapproval, maybe you’re just repeating rumors you’ve heard. But either way, calling someone else a slut is only going to reflect back to you eventually.

Men don’t seem to be affected by the term “slut” or “whore,” if they are, it’s almost a good thing for their reputation. It’s easy for men to throw the terms around freely at girls they’ve hooked up with, got denied by, or don’t even know.

The below video, created by the Norwegian charity organization, CARE, spins the anti-slut movement in a new light. While it may be casual for a young guy to throw around the word “whore,” how will he feel when he has a daughter? He may rebuke with something like, “well my daughter won’t be called a whore, because I won’t raise her to be a whore.” But, what he doesn’t realize is that girls are called whores for something as menial as wearing the wrong type of shoes or looking in the wrong direction. From an early age, women are affected by the names they’ve been called. Like the lead character in the video, girls are sometimes led to believe that they are deserving of the names they’ve been called, they’ve learned to accept their fate as a “slut” or a “whore.”

While public figures such as Amber Rose have reclaimed the slur “slut” with her slut-walk and “walk of no shame,” many women are still not ready to use the term “slut” or “whore” in a positive light. For the women who may watch this video, you will be moved, you may even shed a tear. For the men who stumble upon this video, your eyes may be opened to a world you never realized existed.

Naturally, angry white boys have already started getting riled up about this video. The “lovely” men who spend their Saturday nights surfing youtube have decidedly posted rude comments on the video such as “Or, maybe, do not drink at 16,” or “How much do you wanna bet that when she says “raped”, she actually just regretted having sex with him the night after?” Last and certainly not least, this grammar-whiz commented,”Exactly, if you expect a girl do the abortion. Life is too dangerous, we can’t risk it.”
