Christian Siriano Dresses Minnie Mouse For “Minnie Rocks The Dots”
Fashion designer Christian Siriano joined Minnie Mouse at the launch of “Minnie Rocks The Dots“, an interactive fashion and art exhibition celebrating Minnie as a global style icon, in Los Angeles on National Polka Dot Day (January 22nd). At the launch, Siriano revealed a custom dress designed just for Minnie. “Minnie Mouse and her iconic style have had a huge impact on me and on the fashion industry,” he said. We chatted with Siriano, known for his whimsical and show-stopping designs, about what it felt like to dress somebody as iconic as Minnie Mouse.
Galore: How’d you react when you found out you were going to be designing a dress for Minnie?
Christian Siriano: When they asked if I’d make something for Minnie my answer was obviously, yes! I mean, it’s hard to say no. I think the event is really cool and the idea was just interesting to me.
Did you have to abide by any Minnie Mouse fashion rules?
CS: The sky was the limit as far as ideas went! They just said it had to be a fun dress for a cool party.
What kind of effect did Disney have on you growing up?
CS: I was a heavy Disney lover. I was every single Disney character for Halloween. One Halloween night I even dressed up as 7 different Disney princesses. I was really into it. Even now Brad (Christian’s partner since 2007) and I go as different Disney characters every year. It’s just fun!
What about the effect Disney had on you as a designer?
CS: I didn’t even really realize when I was younger, but now as a designer, every Disney film was so impactful because of the fantasy. In a way, it shows you how to create a world.
Do you have a favorite Disney princess?
CS: I don’t necessarily have a favorite favorite because I’m one of those who loves Belle, but then I also love Sleeping Beauty. Oh, and I love Ariel from “Little Mermaid.” I’m into all of them. I was really into Princess Jasmine for a while.
Why Princess Jasmine?
CS: Well, she was like the first one to wear pants which was really iconic. I always thought it was really cool that she wore pants and a crop top.
What’s one piece of fashion advice you’d give Minnie?
CS: You know it’s interesting because this is “Minnie Rocks The Dots”, and it’s National Polka Dot Day, but they didn’t really want a polka dot dress. I felt like Minnie should wear something new, because she already wears a red polka dot dress. So that’s why I decided to make this dress using Swarovski crystals as the polka dots. It was kind of a fun challenge. I think it made Minnie cooler than she already is.
Do you have a favorite moment in fashion where Minnie was used as the inspiration?
CS: I mean, the portrait that Herb Ritts took of Madonna with the Minnie ears is amazing. But everyone has worn something from Minnie’s world. It’s kind of one of those things where whether you’re 5 years-old or 80 years-old, you’ll always love her.
“Minnie Rocks The Dots” is located at The Paper Agency in Los Angeles and will be open to the public on Saturday, January 23rd from 12-8 p.m.
