What the Chinese New Year Means for Your Horoscope

We know you’re used to paying attention to your star sign — but the Chinese New Year, which starts today, has its own system of astrology to guide you through the next year.

First, a brief history of Chinese astrology: it’s the oldest astrology system. Legend has it that Buddha threw a party and invited all of the animals. Only 12 came, and he rewarded each of them with a year they would rule.

Now, each year is ruled by a different one of those animals. That means the year you were born dictates what your Chinese Astrology sign is — and according to legend, that affects everything from your personality to your career.

The Chinese calendar is based on the phases of the moon. The signs are cyclical and repeat every twelve years unlike western astrology, which cycles monthly. There are 12 animal symbols, each representing the personality traits and characteristics of the person born that year. So all babies born this year will be monkeys.

According to Chinese astrology, people born in the year of the monkey are highly adaptable individuals with very sharp minds, who are constantly on the outlook for new adventures.

Monkeys are not as crazy as you might think. They actually are the problem solvers of the zodiac, and find solutions to even the most complicated problems. Monkeys are able to make order out of chaos.

The fire element will definitely add lots and lots of hot passion. It will be a powerful year for sex lust and love. The monkey encourages you to actually go for your deepest desires in a fiery direct way. Hot, hot, hot.

2015 was the year of the sweet but passive aggressive sheep. That kind of slowed down the process of pursuing our goals. We can get a tremendous amount of work done, now that the year of the mellow sheep is over. The monkey can be very unpredictable though, so be prepared to work hard and stand up for what you deserve.

The essence of the monkey year is to be confident and take risks and bold actions to fulfill our dreams and get what we want.

Here’s what your Chinese astrology sign is, according to your birth year, plus your horoscope for the next year.
