Caitlyn Jenner Halloween Costume Suggests Mockery of Trans Community
The new ‘Call Me Caitlyn’ Unisex Halloween Costume has created a wave of backlash due to the high chance of increased transphobia and marginalization of the trans-community as a result of the abhorrent costume. Coming from the same company, Spirit Halloween, that produced the controversial ‘Sexy Ebola Nurse’ costume, this costume just took the cake for most offensive.
Head of PR and marketing at Spirit Halloween, Trisha Lombardo says to New York Daily News, ‘Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year, and Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her.’ However, the way the costume is advertised is with a less-than-average looking white man wearing a cheap wig and a body suit and sash in an attempt to recreate the iconic Vanity Fair cover of Caitlyn Jenner from earlier this year. The tagline beneath the photo, ‘You’ll be sure to get a few laughs out of your friends and the other guests.’ Seems like anything but a celebration.
This costume and its marketing tactics suggests a mockery, not only of Caitlyn Jenner, but of the entire trans community. Advocates and supporters of the trans community are taking to social media to voice their outrage, ‘With a reputation of sexist, racist, and culturally appropriative costumes, we are concerned that this costume will continue your oppressive tradition with a transphobic costume of Caitlyn Jenner.’ Trans-activist Addison Vincent has even created a petition on Change.org to discontinue the costume. One individual signing the petition says on CNBC, ‘I’m signing because this costume mocks the validity of a transgender’s identity, implying a man wearing a dress is the same as a person dressing to their comfort and identity.’ Discontinuing Spirit Halloween in general may be the better choice, considering their utter lack of respect and regard for diversity and culture.
