How did you get into acting?
Well, I got the acting bug in high school after joining theater my junior year. Acting was something that came very natural to me, so I was very excited to do it. After joining the class, I found myself writing skits which were later used in an upcoming play for the school. This is when I knew that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
How did you land the part in “The Equalizer”?
Through the grace of God. I’ve been acting for a long time, therefore I’m used to the traditional first call, call back, testing, etc. However, for this film the process was extremely quick. I auditioned on tape with the casting director. Antoine Fuqua immediately loved what I did on tape, and the next week I was on a plane on my way to work opposite Denzel. It was an unreal feeling when I sat in the production office and overheard his voice in the other room. I thought it was the TV, but then he stepped out. This is when I realized this was all really happening.
How was it working with Denzel?
It was amazing. It’s an experience that I will take with me for the rest of my career. I learned so much so by watching him work up close, and I also observed how he carried himself off camera. He’s a living legend and one the greatest to ever do it, so it was an honor and I am humbled to have shared the screen with him. I look forward to the opportunity to work with him in the future as I continue to grow in my career.
What can we expect from the movie?
You should expect to be extremely entertained! Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington have done it again. This film will easily be in your top 5 Denzel films of all time, along with being one of the best films of the year. It’s Exciting. It’s Action. It’s Denzel. What more do you need?
You’re also working with Jennifer Aniston on Cake, what was that like?
Jennifer Aniston was such a sweetheart. We took the time to rehearse together before heading to the actual set, so when I arrived to set I was welcomed with open arms. Once again, I was honored and humbled to share the screen with such an accomplished actor. The director, Daniel Barnz, was an amazing person as well.
You also appear in Black Jesus, which has blown up. How do you feel about it all ?
The show is doing extremely well. I was not surprised by that at all. I had such an amazing time on set because I got to work with comedy heavyweights such as John Witherspoon, DC Curry, and Charlie Murphy. Aaron McGruder is a genius in his own right, and his take or spin on things is very unique and risky, but he’s not afraid to take them. I respect and appreciate that from any person or artist.
What other things aside from acting do you enjoy doing?
My first love is basketball, but since you can’t teach height, my love affair with acting quickly took over. I love boxing during my spare time. It’s a great sport for focus, skill, and self discipline. It has also allowed me to stay in great shape, which is another plus.
What else is coming up for you?
I’ve been blessed to have recently begun working on Straight Outta Compton: The NWA Biopic. Being able to work with Ice Cube, Dr Dre, and F. Gary Gray was another great moment in my career. I can’t wait for everyone to see this film. I believe it will be something special. Also, I am happy to begin production next month on my TV series with BET titled The Start Up. I will be starring along side Diggy Simmons, Teyana Taylor, Bria Murphy, Chris Brew, and Stephanie Charles. My production company, Only Son Production, is close to wrapping up the first season of our first Original Comedy series titled Who The F*ck is Uncle, which is set to release online in 2015. I am very grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way, and I’m even more excited for what is yet to come in the future. Thank you so much again for your time and for allowing me to be a part of your magazine. God Bless.
