Angelina Jolie-Pitt Says Her Most Shocking Thing Yet: She Loves Menopause
In a recent interview with The Daily Telegraph, Angelina Jolie-Pitt discussed marriage, mastectomy, and menopause. The actress and director became an advocate for making informed health care decisions after deciding to get a double mastectomy in 2013. Jolie-Pitt shared her intimate story via a New York Times oped. This year, she penned another oped, explaining her choice to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. The surgery forces a woman to go into menopause, and Angelina isn’t upset about it. In the recent Telegraph interview she says, “I actually love being in menopause…I haven’t had a terrible reaction to it, so I’m very fortunate. I feel older, and I feel settled being older.”
IMO, this is such an important message. Women over forty in the entertainment industry are often shunned from roles or play matronly roles; while, male actors over forty are working in romantic films with twenty something actresses. Amy Schumer chronicled this pattern, in her skit, “Last F*ckable Day”, in which Tina Fey, Julia Louis Dreyfus, and Patricia Arquette satirically celebrate the end of their roles as sexy women.
Jolie-Pitt isn’t buying into any of this. Instead, she affirms, “I feel happy that I’ve grown up. I don’t want to be young again.” Angelina Jolie- Pitt is completing owning her experience aging. In the upcoming film, By the Sea, Angelina stars with husband, Brad Pitt. In the movie, Angelina will do topless scenes. She says of her choice to do them, the scenes were in the original script and it did feel wrong to take them out because of the mastectomy. I think it’s important to be seen as you are.”
