Adidas Just Made a Huge Promise to LGBTQ Athletes
Adidas is making sure the world knows of their pro-LGBTQ stance, and we love it.
It started when the brand’s Instagram posted a super cute photo of two women on tiptoe for a kiss on Valentines Day. And now, the brand has put it in writing that they’ll stand by any athletes they endorse who decide to come out of the closet.
This is huge — it means that if one of the athletes Adidas endorses announces that they’re gay, Adidas won’t drop them as a sponsor. And fear of losing that cash can be a huge factor in why so many athletes refrain from coming out.
“Adidas acknowledges and adheres to the principles of diversity, as this is a central part of the Adidas group philosophy,” the updated contract reads, according to New Now Next. “Therefore Adidas warrants that this agreement will neither be terminated nor modified in case the athlete comes out to the public as a member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.”
This is big, since the sports world can sometimes be a tricky place for LGBT people. Here’s hoping that Adidas has kickstarted a new era of acceptance toward athletes of all sexual orientations.
