The 21 Fashion Moments Of 2015 That We Still Can’t Stop Talking About

The fashion industry is notorious for being exclusive, discriminatory and vapid beyond belief.  However, this year fashion proved that it’s capable of changing, in no small part thanks to the willingness of celebrities and models like Gigi Hadid, Caitlyn Jenner and Zendaya to lead the charge towards inclusivity and acceptance.

Of course, not every major fashion moment was so profound.  In fact, most weren’t, but then again part of the beauty of the fashion world is that Kim Kardashian going blonde can share the same page as Maria Borges making history for being the first African American model to walk down the Victoria’s Secret runway with her natural hair.

Here’s a list of all the 21 beauty moments from this year that we still can’t get over.

Gigi Hadid Called Out Her Body Shaming Trolls On Instagram

If you’re a celebrity and you’re on the Internet, there’s a 100% chance that right this second somebody is writing something mean about the way you look, the way you act, or how you’re a talentless phony who should kill themselves.  During New York Fashion Week, Gigi Hadid decided that enough was enough and shared a body positive note on Instagram that told the world, “Yes, I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs…if you don’t like it, don’t follow me, don’t watch me, cause I’m not going anywhere.  If I didn’t have the body I do, I wouldn’t have the career I do.  I love that I can be sexy.  I’m proud of it.”

Kylie Jenner Launched A Line Of Lipstick That Broke The Internet

Kylie Jenner // Instagram

For the first half of 2015, all anybody could talk about was Kylie Jenner’s lips.  Teenagers around the world tried to get them, and after it came out that Kylie had resorted to lip fillers to achieve her signature pout, the hate directed at the then 17-year-old was relentless.  However, in the second half of 2015, Kylie Jenner rose above the gossip and used what used to be the thorn in her side to break the Internet.  After her long-awaited lip kit was released finally online, it sold out in less than 20 seconds and the influx of traffic caused her website to crash for the rest of the day.

Maria Borges Made History On The Victoria’s Secret Runway

In addition to inspiring me to buy every piece of lingerie she wore in this picture, Angolan beauty Maria Borges inspired by the world by being the first black model to walk down the Victoria’s Secret runway with her natural hair.  “I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair,” Borges revealed in an interview with Essence. “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”  #progress

Kim Kardashian Goes Blonde

Kim Kardashian shocked the world when she showed up to the Balmain show at Paris Fashion Week last march sporting bleach blonde hair.  The color didn’t last, but at least we’ll always have these super weird photos taken by Juergen Teller to remember it by.

Adam Levine Goes Bald

Still from The Voice

Okay, so I may have freaked out a little too much when I said that Adam Levine’s bald head threw me into the depths of an existential crisis, but let’s be honest, a shaved head is not a good look on him.  After two excruciating weeks of watching The Voice and wanting to reevaluate my very idea of what the word sexy meant, Adam Levine decided to let his hair grow back out and once again become the sex symbol of my youth.

Vanity Fair Introduced Us To Cailtyn Jenner

2015 was a major year for transgender awareness.  Models like Hari Nef and Andrej Pejic were embraced by the fashion industry, Transparent rightly became everybody’s new favorite TV show, and Bruce Jenner came out as Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of a nationally sold magazine.  “This shoot was about my life and who I am as a person,” she said. “It’s not about the fanfare, it’s not about people cheering in the stadium, it’s not about going down the street and everybody giving you ‘that a boy, Bruce,’ pat on the back, O.K. This is about your life.”

Cara Delevingne Said Goodbye To Being A Model

Even though she’s still staring in campaigns (and probably will be forever), this year Cara Delevingne decided to start focus her energy on a new passion: acting.  Speaking out against the fashion industry Cara said, “It’s horrible living in a world where I’ll get a call from someone saying, ‘So-and-so says you were partying a lot and you were looking this way and you need to lose weight’…I ended up feeling a bit empty. Fashion is about what’s on the outside, and that’s it. There’s no searching, it’s just creating pretty things.”

Lily Rose Depp came out of nowhere to steal our hearts

Lily Rose Depp may only be 15-years-old, but after she showed up at Chanel’s Métiers d’Art in a head-to-toe Chanel outfit that even some fully grown women wouldn’t be able to pull off, it wasn’t long before the spawn of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradsis became a bonafide model, booking campaigns for Chanel and getting her pose on with Stella Maxwell for Love Magazine.

American Apparel Filed For Bankruptcy

After years of quasi-pornographic advertising and an endless amount of sexual harassment stories, American Apparel ousted CEO and founder Dov Charney from the company, spending a small fortune in ensuing legal fees.  After months of speculation, the brand officially filed for bankruptcy, but is currently continuing to sell millenials overpriced leggings, tight pants and skimpy shirts.

Rihanna won the Met Gala by wearing a dress that spawned a thousand memes

Seriously, still can’t get over this dress.

Kanye West decided to show at New York Fashion Show at the last minute

In a move that pissed off a handful of fashion designers, Kanye West decided that he wanted to show Yeezy Season 2 at NYFW after all.  The resulting show was just as weird as Season 1 and featured a color-coded parade of marching models and the premiere of a new Kanye track that may or may not be on his new album which may or may not be called Swish.

Amy Schumer And Serena Williams Changed the Face Of The Pirelli Calendar

The Pirelli Calendar is known for featuring sexy photos of tall, skinny, naked models.  This year however, the annual calendar was shot by Annie Leibovitz and featured an entirely different group of women, like Serena Williams, Tavi Gevinson and Patti Smith.  Of course, the calendar did still feature one hot, naked babe: Amy Schumer.  Say it with me: girl power.

Miley Cyrus wore a strap on and made her last red carpet appearance

Miley Cyrus was 2015’s queen of irreverent and controversial fashion, and from her nip slip at the VMAs to the time she wore a strap on and licked her armpit hair for a photo shoot, Miley proved that she really is as out there as she seems.  Oh, and she also hinted on Instagram that she was done with red carpets forever, but she may just mean for the rest of the year.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Ariana Grande showed us what her real hair looks like

Ariana Grande // Instagram

It’s a well-known fact that Ariana Grande wears hear extensions that she ties back in an extremely tight ponytail for nearly every single public appearance she’s made since emerging as a sexy baby diva sent from Heaven, so naturally she made quite a stir when she posted a picture to Instagram that showed off her actual hair, which looks like it’s made a full recovery after years of being dyed red for that Nickelodeon show you never watched.  Will 2016 be the year Ariana finally ditches the ponytail for her natural curls?  Again, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Lane Bryant Launched A Campaign To Empower All Women

Lane Bryant

2015 was a big year for plus size models, and even though Lane Bryant’s #ImNoAngelCampaign received criticism for not featuring women who were plus size enough, the fact that the companies’s advertisement featured plus-size women celebrating and flaunting their curves was truly a victory for body positivity.

Ashley Benson offended people by wearing a Cecil the Lion halloween costume

Ashley Benson // Instagram

This summer, a lot of people got very angry that some random dentist had the nerve to kill a lion named Cecil who was basically a national treasure.  This Halloween, Ashley Benson decided it would be a fun idea to dress up like Cecil and then ask her 9.3 million followers, “what do you guys think of this lion costume.”  Spoiler alert: most of them didn’t take their mother’s advice about not saying anything at all if they didn’t have something nice to say.

Nipples became the hottest fashion trend of 2015

After New York Fashion Week, nipples were everywhere.  Instagram still won’t let you free them, but luckily fashion has proven significantly more accepting.

Amber Rose And Blac Chyna Wore Dresses With The Word Slut On Them

At this year’s Video Music Awards, instead of just looking hot, Amber Rose and Blac Chyna chose to send a message by wearing dresses with the words ‘slut’, ‘bitch’ and ‘gold digger’ on them: you can either succumb to all the shaming words people sling at you, or you can rise above it and stand tall.

Kendall Jenner posted a photo of her hair and it became the most liked Instagram photo ever

Wouldn’t it be nice if your copycat photo got even half as many likes?

America’s Next Top Model Called It Quits

After ten seasons of manufactured drama, surprise double eliminations and bitches crying about getting a hair cut, America’s Next Top Model decided to throw in the towel.  Nothing will ever be the same again.

Zendaya Got Her Own Barbie Doll Because Dreads Are Beautiful

Zendaya is proof that empowering moments can germinate from ugly ones.  On the 2015 Oscars Red Carpet, Giuliana Rancic made a comment that Zendaya’s faux dreadlocks probably smelled like “patchouli oil and weed,” and instead of staying quiet, Zendaya spoke up about the “outrageously offensive” stereotype, transforming herself from a Disney star into an icon overnight.  A few months later, Barbie called with an offer to immortalize her Oscars look with a brand new doll.  Finally, after fifty-six years, Mattel is giving us a Barbie we can actually look up to.
